Social Sciences Years 0-10 Learning Area

Introduction

The journey to strengthen the National Curriculum continues to reach significant milestones with the release of the draft Years 0-10 curriculum content during Term 4, 2025.

The draft learning area for Years 0-10 Social Sciences in The NZC is now available and we welcome your feedback on this content during our consultation through to Friday, 24 April 2026.

By drawing on the expertise of teachers, principals, education professionals, academics and associations, we aim to strengthen student progress and achievement. Your insights are central to this and will help shape curriculum content that is clear, structured, evidence-based, and grounded in the science of learning.

Following consultation, the draft content will be finalised, with formal release of the updated curriculum planned for mid-2026. Years 0-8 Social Sciences will become required teaching from the start of 2027.

Approach

The feedback form focuses on Phases 1 - 4 of the draft Social Sciences learning area. The form has space for you to give feedback on each section of the learning area and then an opportunity for you to give overall feedback at the end.

You will need to have the draft content available for reference as you progress through the form. The content can be found here Social Sciences Years 0-10.

We recommend that the feedback form be completed as a group but we also welcome individual responses where a group approach is not possible. Some of the questions will ask you to focus on one phase of learning (i.e. Phase 4, Years 9-10) so it is best to group yourselves in this way, but you can provide feedback on more than one phase.

For more information about the draft learning area, including what you will recognise and what is new, the presentation, available supports, timelines, and what’s next please refer to the information sheet on Tāhūrangi.
