Introduction

The journey to strengthen the National Curriculum continues to reach significant milestones with the release of the draft Years 0-10 curriculum content during Term 4, 2025.

The draft learning area for Years 0-10 Social Sciences in The NZC is now available and we welcome your feedback on this content during our consultation through to Friday, 24 April 2026.

By drawing on the expertise of teachers, principals, education professionals, academics and associations, we aim to strengthen student progress and achievement. Your insights are central to this and will help shape curriculum content that is clear, structured, evidence-based, and grounded in the science of learning.

Following consultation, the draft content will be finalised, with formal release of the updated curriculum planned for mid-2026. Years 0-8 Social Sciences will become required teaching from the start of 2027.

Approach

The feedback form focuses on Phases 1 - 4 of the draft Social Sciences learning area. The form has space for you to give feedback on each section of the learning area and then an opportunity for you to give overall feedback at the end.

You will need to have the draft content available for reference as you progress through the form. The content can be found here Social Sciences Years 0-10.

We recommend that the feedback form be completed as a group but we also welcome individual responses where a group approach is not possible. Some of the questions will ask you to focus on one phase of learning (i.e. Phase 4, Years 9-10) so it is best to group yourselves in this way, but you can provide feedback on more than one phase.

For more information about the draft learning area, including what you will recognise and what is new, the presentation, available supports, timelines, and what’s next please refer to the information sheet on Tāhūrangi.
Privacy

We do not ask you to identify yourself as part of this survey. We will ask you some questions about who you are, including your region, ethnicity, and your email address. We ask these details to better allow us to analyse the response we receive and so we can contact you to follow up on your feedback should you choose to provide it. These questions are optional, and we will still take your other responses into account if you choose not to answer them.

No individuals or organisations will be named or identified in any reports written from this feedback process.

We use Survey Monkey to administer this survey. Your responses collected as part of this survey – once downloaded from Survey Monkey – will be held in secure Ministry of Education systems and will only be able to be accessed by staff associated with the review. Responses may be subject to release if they are requested under the Official Information Act. If we have to release your response, we will seek to protect your privacy, including not disclosing your identity to the full extent permitted by the law. You have the right to access information we hold about you and request correction of that information. Because the survey is designed to complete it anonymously, please be aware that we may not be able to identify or link to your response.

Your responses will be retained while we complete analysis and reporting and for six months before being securely disposed of.
